Message from the President
December 19, 2008
My name is Alyssa McCourt. I am 16 years old and the President of Project AWARE.
I have dealt with many issues that kids face today. When I was in 6th grade I was harassed in school and sick from the stress, failing classes, and suffering from depression. Lots of young people go through that – and I know how much they hurt. I wanted to help.
Project AWARE’s mission is to empower young people to lead. The organization has supported me to speak up and make a difference, and now I get the chance to inspire youth and help them realize they are not alone. The Project AWARE Players new movie “Untold Stories” is based in part on my story of harassment. As a troupe member, I co-created the story and play the lead character Jordan.
I am one example of young people taking the lead and making a difference about the issues that concern them. Project AWARE has supported many others – here are some highlights:
- Youth have identified many issues including substance abuse, bullying / harassment, and much more
- Project AWARE “Youth Empowerment Workshops” support and inspire young people to creatively address these issues and make a difference
- Overall and to-date Project AWARE has reached over 25,000 people directly with a message from youth
- The Project AWARE Players are a 15 member troupe of young people that create dramatic presentations for schools and communities to raise awareness about youth issues.
- In addition to live presentations to thousands of people over the last 4 years, the Players have created 2 powerful movies about bullying / harassment and youth prescription drug abuse
I think that supporting a youth organization is one of the most critical investments a community can make in a healthy future and it will result in a world that is more balanced, more peaceful, more just.
An empowered young person also grows into an effective, dynamic, and compassionate leader as an adult. You can count on it.
Sincerely,
Alyssa McCourt, President
